“Into Darkness”  by Sufi_Paul

Looking at this picture I have only one question in my mind: what is behind the planet, what is behind the horizon? There is such vast space painted by light and shadow. And tiny ship hanging exactly where the night and day meeting on the planet, creating yet another horizon. I like this composition because it tells many stories.SpaceGamer
It can be difficult to show the shear scale of things in this game. But as I starred at the Cutlass’s unmistakable silhouette, delicately slicing the horizon and the great vastness beyond, this image, for me, screams “SPACE”.WeeHamster
The tiny Cutlass silhouette and engine trails are framed nicely against the massive horizon of microTech. The 21:9 aspect ratio helps establish this as an epic, cinematic moment. Well done.Hasgaha

“IntoTheRabbitHole”  by Haxlu101

I had mixed feelings about this one because so big part of the composition is just nearly black inside of the spaceship. I’ve realised that the darkness of the spaceship makes what’s behind the window even more beautiful I am on this ship, I am travelling behind the horizon of this planet. And just thin glass between me and the Universe.SpaceGamer
A slice of the world below is beautifully carved out by the framing of the open hatch. One can’t help but feel the stillness of the scene, as your eye look out to the horizon. Then, without warning, apprehension kicks in as you realise, you are exposed to open space.WeeHamster
Using the circular window and interior to frame the moon’s horizon and textured surface was genious. The interior has just enough detail and contrast to establish WHAT it is without distracting from the subjuect of the image.Hasgaha

“Red horizon”  by ln_nova

I love well-balanced compositions and this one is exactly this. A very classic story expressed in bold shapes, light and shadows. Good work on DOF and perspective. It’s all about the horizon. But behind the ship. And you cannot go wrong with sundowns and sunsets!SpaceGamer
Nicely proportioned with the background blurred and zoomed in, creating a beautiful backdrop, worthy for the end scene of THX 1138. It helps you to focus on the subtle detailing of the indistinguishable bulk, that is, The Valkyrie.WeeHamster
I like that this is a horizon shot without actually focusing specifically on the horizon. It’s there… and it’s part of the story. But by focusing on the Valkeryie, the theme is visually more subtle and unique in this image.Hasgaha

“New opportunities await behind every horizon”  by KC85_U880

What a classic and simple approach! When I saw the topic for this contest, probably this is the vie I had in front of my eyes. What I love is how blurry light from the star rising behind the horizon makes the whole view worthwhile, dreamy and f tranquillity.SpaceGamer
With the sun just below the horizon, helping to create a very clam looking scene, and a misty surface, perforated with mountain tops, all coming together nicely to create this very ethereal looking screenshot.WeeHamster
I love everything about this shot. From the incredibly soothing colors to the mountains appearing to emerge from a fog of myst. It’s incredibly serene. I think my one complaint is the use of chromatic abberation (the blur and color shift at the edge/corners of the frame). I think the effect distracts from an otherwise perfect capture.Hasgaha

“Horizontally Challenged”  by CaptEightySix

This is my type of composition. Many time I’ve experimented with ships and models going from out of the screen. I also love the symmetry. I think I would like to see the same shot in B&W. I think it would bring a different vibe to this photo.SpaceGamer
I do like thinking out of the box, so when a horizon is turned into a vertical, a surreal image can be created and still be beautiful. By a simple change of perspective, a scene where a Buccaneer engine jet blast can be wonderfully offset by the low-lying sun that reflects off the water surface.WeeHamster
A very unique and interesting angle for the theme. It’s hard to go wrong with a Hurston sunset. If it were me, I might play with different focal lenghts and alignments to see if something more interesting came out of the framing.Hasgaha

CONGRATULATIONS to the winners!! I’ll be contacting them shortly. And thanks to all who participated as well as my fellow judges on this contest; SpaceGamer and Weehamster.

My last Star Citizen screenshot contest ended in March with many fantastic entries for the "on foot" theme. Congratulations again to krosisen, MAXPER, and RedSolstice for winning the Star Citizen gift cards and to MasterOfHell for the Honorable Mention. If you want to see the results from March's contest, go here. And again, a huge thanks to CrucianGaming for effectively doubling the prize values that I was offering for that contest!

This month's contest will work the exact same way... except with new prizes, a new theme ("Horizon"), and new guest judges (SpaceGamer and Weehamster). So, check out the prizes, read through the rules, fawn over our guest judges and submit your winning shots!

On the CONTEST ENDS date listed above, submissions will stop and our esteemed judges will start the process of meticulously looking through ALL the entries. Entries will be judged on the following:

  • Interpretation & execution of the THEME:
How well does your screenshot capture and/or convey the theme of the contest.
  • Composition:
The arrangement of the elements within the photo should be pleasing to the eye. How well did you use the available space within the frame? Does the placement of the elements and position of the camera suit the idea or theme of the image?
  • Creativity:
Does your image convey the idea or theme in an original and imaginative way? Does the image hint at a deeper story or was it captured in an unconventional way?

Judging will be done privately and on an individual basis by the selected judges. This is NOT done in committee or with discussion among other judges. Judge votes are theirs alone and theirs to be given as they see fit. All votes from the judges will remain anonymous and will never be disclosed to the public. While voting, judges will only see the images and image titles. They will not see usernames attached to entries nor how many votes from other judges an entry might have.

Judging, unless otherwise specified, will occur in multiple rounds. Entries with the lowest votes will be removed and NOT proceed to subsequent rounds. The number of rounds could vary for each contest based on how many entries are received.

Things to consider that won't hurt your chances, but are NOT required:

  • As high a resolution image as you can take. 1920 x 1080 is the bare minimum... go higher if you can.
  • The highest image quality (as little compression) as possible. Remember, while JPGs are easy, they are a LOSSY compressed format and are a degraded form of what you saw in game. Lossless PNG is recommended.
  • Submitting older screenshots from previous versions of the game IS allowed if they match the theme and meet the requirements. However, the game's graphics, textures, lighting, shadows, etc are constantly being improved and older screenshots might have a hard time competing with current screenshots.
  • An image with the first person GUI (ammo count, health meter, etc) or third party overlay (Discord, FPS counter, etc) does NOT look great. Try to remember to use the robust Advanced Camera System AND hide any overlays BEFORE capturing your shot.
